Delhi Solar Policy 2026 — free rooftop solar up to 400 units
If your Delhi home averages up to 400 units a month, the Delhi government will install a rooftop solar system of up to 3 kW at zero upfront cost, with 5 years of free maintenance. Households under 200 units keep their existing power subsidy and earn an energy-saving incentive on top.

That is roughly 315–405 units a month of generation in Delhi NCR — enough to cover most of a 400-unit household.
What it actually costs you
The amendment raised Delhi's capital subsidy to match the central one. A 3 kW system now carries Rs. 1,56,000 of direct subsidy before the government's gap top-up.

The top-up covers the difference between the combined subsidy and the tendered cost of the plant, which is the mechanism that makes the installation free rather than merely subsidised. Outside the eligible bracket you pay the balance after Rs. 1,56,000.
Under 200 units vs 201–400
Most coverage blurs these two. They are different outcomes.
Up to 200 units a month

- Your bill was already near zero — the gain here is the incentive, not the bill.
201 to 400 units a month
- Free rooftop system up to 3 kW.
- You are paying real money today — this bracket gains the most.
- Net metering credits the units you export back to the grid.
- 315–405 units a month of generation offsets most of your consumption.
How to apply

Register on the PM Surya Ghar portal
pmsuryaghar.gov.in — DISCOM, consumer number, mobile. This is what unlocks the central subsidy.

Apply on the Delhi Solar Portal
solar.delhi.gov.in handles the Delhi capital subsidy and the Generation Based Incentive. Both applications run in parallel.

Feasibility approval from your DISCOM
BSES or Tata Power-DDL verifies your sanctioned load and roof. Typically one to two weeks.

Installation and inspection
An empanelled vendor installs; the DISCOM inspects and swaps in a bidirectional net meter.

Subsidy release
Central subsidy is credited to your bank account after commissioning; the Delhi capital subsidy follows on the state portal's release cycle.

What "free" does not cover
- Above 400 units a month. You are outside the free bracket. Subsidies still apply; the balance is yours.
- Above 3 kW. The free installation is capped at 3 kW. A larger system is a paid upgrade on top.
- The tendered-vendor route. Free installations run through government-empanelled vendors at the tendered specification — you are not choosing panels, inverter brand or structure height.
- After year 5. Maintenance is free for 5 years. Beyond that, cleaning and servicing are on you or on an AMC.
- Structures and roof work. Elevated structures, waterproofing or roof strengthening beyond the standard scope are not part of a tendered 3 kW package.
If your bill is above 400 units, the honest answer is that this scheme is not the one that will help you most — a correctly sized paid system with net metering will. Run the numbers on your actual bill.
