Solar Panels for Schools in Delhi NCR — What a Campus Plant Really Costs

Every rupee a school spends on a power bill is a rupee not spent on teachers, labs, or scholarships. A school's roof is its largest unused asset. Solar converts that roof into a 25-year income stream — and trusts can do it with zero upfront cost via OPEX/PPA.

Why This Matters for Schools & Colleges

The case for solar on a school, in plain numbers.

Schools have huge flat roofs, daytime load, and weekend export — a near-perfect solar profile.

OPEX/PPA model: we own the plant, you buy power at ₹4–5 per unit fixed for 15 years. Zero capex.

Strong NEP 2020 and CBSE green-school signalling — boards and parents notice.

Living lab for students. Built-in monitoring dashboard for physics and environment programmes.

What Actually Decides a Schools & Colleges Plant

Not panel brands. The connection class, the load curve, and the file the DISCOM accepts — these are the four things that change the answer.

    Connection class

Non-domestic LT (up to ~150 kW sanctioned) for most K-12 campuses; larger senior-secondary and junior-college campuses cross into LT-CT or HT-11 kV. Educational trusts in Delhi are billed on the non-domestic slab, not a concessional one — the tariff assumption that matters for payback.

    Real load profile

The best solar profile of any segment we serve, and the most misunderstood. Consumption runs 7 am to 3 pm — almost exactly the generation window — but collapses on Sundays, and for roughly 60 vacation days a year the campus is near-idle while the plant keeps producing. Annual offset therefore depends on net-metering credit carry-forward far more than on panel efficiency, which is why an OPEX/PPA priced per unit consumed can be worth less to a school than a CAPEX plant that banks its exports.

    Net-metering route

Filed under the trust's or society's name with the serving DISCOM circle office. Two things stall school files specifically: the electricity connection is often in the name of a predecessor trust, and the roof is frequently a first-floor slab of a building whose completion certificate lists a lower storey count. Both are fixable, both take longer than the installation.

    What the audit asks for

CBSE's Green School Programme awards points for measured renewable share, and NEP 2020 names sustainable infrastructure directly. A live generation dashboard in the reception is the single most cited artefact during inspections and admission-season parent walkthroughs.

    Delhi NCR Specifics

How It Works Inside Your DISCOM

National EPCs reuse the same deck whether you're in Bengaluru or Bareilly. Your school sits inside a specific NCR DISCOM with its own rules.

BSES Rajdhani / BSES Yamuna (Delhi)

Commercial net-metering is permitted up to your sanctioned load. We design within those limits and handle the BRPL/BYPL liaisoning end-to-end — the part most vendors leave to you.

    Tata Power Delhi (TPDDL)

North/north-west Delhi runs on TPDDL with its own application portal and feasibility window. We've moved commercial connections through it; we know which documents are the actual blockers.

    DHBVN (Gurugram / Faridabad)

Haryana's commercial tariff plus cross-subsidy surcharge makes solar payback the most aggressive in NCR. Open-access and group captive structures are an option for larger schools.

UPPCL (Noida / Ghaziabad / Greater Noida)

UPNEDA + UPPCL coordination is where most outsiders get stuck for months. We've done it. We'll tell you up-front what your timeline actually looks like, not what a brochure says.

Typical Capacity for Schools & Colleges

Most schools & colleges we design land in the 100 kW – 300 kW depending on campus size range. A 200 kW plant is a good reference point.

CAPEX vs OPEX/PPA — Which Fits You?

The honest answer: it depends on your tax position and your appetite for capex. We do both. Here's the side-by-side.
